"Mario" Villa

The estate's impressive main building is accessed down a long cypress-tree-lined lane after turning off from a side street. The estate stretches over 26 hectares. The farm grows vegetables, cereals and olives. There is a pomiculture and a wood with around 15,000 trees. The estate produces absolutely first-class olive oil known as "Aprutino - Pescarese", which is cold-pressed, delicious and low in acidity (make sure you take some for at home). All the products produced on the estate are in line with official organic farming standards.

Mario is situated in the middle of some picturesque and rolling countryside. Both the mountains and the sea are about an half hour's drive away. The main building has recently undergone tasteful restoration work and offers spacious rooms and holiday apartments.

The estate's location means that it's an excellent spot from where to undertake a range of different trips and excursions. But if relaxing is more your thing, then you might want to try the pool side (18 m x 8 m, 1.20 m to 2.50 m deep) while at the same time taking in the view of the mountains. A table-tennis table and a table football game are also available here. The kids will find plenty of space for playing. The estate is also home to several different species of animals. Another plus point: mountain bikes are available for all guests at no extra charge; what better way of discovering all that the local area has to offer.

Pool season: from the second saturday in May to the third sunday in September

Location and activities

The estate is situated in the Pescara province, 30 km from the coast. It's a ten minutes' drive to a small town with a wonderful old town area. You will also find most essential shops here. It's also only a few minutes' drive to some tennis courts and a riding stable. Known for its nightlife, Pescara is about 30 km away from the estate. The Sea and the Gran Sasso National Park are both about 25 km away.

It's a 7 km drive to the small town of Penne with its WWF nature oasis. You will need to plan an hour for a trip to the Maiella National Park. There are a number of trips into the National Parks that are sure to be of interest to lovers of the outdoors and sports enthusiasts alike. The Maielletta and Gran Sasso mountains and the spectacular Campo Imperatore plateau are within easy reach both during the winter and summer months. Those interested in art will also find a number of attractive locations nearby: Indeed, the town itself with its treasures from the Middle Ages and renaissance period is one of the most beautiful locations in the region. Atri, the town boasting the most art treasures in the Abruzzi region, is located approx. 40 km away. The town offers visitors the opportunity to admire some glorious and well-kept examples of Latin art and to marvel at the frescos from the renaissance period in the cathedral. The town of Chieti which boasts the most important archaeological collection in the Abruzzi region, hot springs and a theatre from the Roman period (remains of the old-Roman town of "Teate") is also easy to reach being only 30 km away. You'll need about an hour to reach the well-known ceramics town of Castelli with its many small workshops.

The villa forms the ideal location for an interesting and varied holiday. Mario, the owner of the estate is only too happy to offer advice on trips and tell you what there is to do round and about while you're staying. He also organizes trips to different places of interest (museums and art attractions).

Cuisine

Mario puts a great deal of love and attention into his cooking. Indeed, even those with a more discerning palate are unlikely to be disappointed. He uses fresh products most of which has been grown on the estate and in accordance with organic farming standards. The day begins with breakfast consisting of homemade cake, biscuits and jams and ends with the evening meal taken in the arched cellar of which we have fond memories. This a good place to become acquainted with the variety and originality of rural cooking: excellent pastas that are full of fantasy, pulse, vegetables, salads, meat and chicken from the estate's own rearing activities, roast chicken, duck or rabbit in tomato sauce.

Meals are accompanied with one of the region's fine wines such as a red Montepulciano DOC or a white Trebbiano DOC. In addition to this, the needs of coeliac patients can be catered for and gluten-free meals served if required. Vegetarians can also enjoy a rich and balanced diet. Indeed, the food is so good that it even puts some star restaurants in the shade. The hacienda's own produce including olive oil, cheese, "Ricotta" and jams are also available for purchase. Enjoying the fragrance and taste of these Abruzzi region products on those long winter evenings will either help temper the longing memories of your holiday or simply make you long to return.

Where you'll be staying

The rooms are all tastefully decorated. They are spacious and bathed in light. The accommodation offers solid wood furniture (cupboards, tables, chairs, beds and bed-side tables) and mattresses that have been designed to be kind to your back.

All the bathrooms have a shower and large windows, are well kept and equipped with tasteful fittings and tiles.
The kitchen areas in the holiday apartments are new in a classic country-house style. The larger apartments also have a dish washer. Guests can also use a washing machine in a separate room.

The estate offers 10 holiday apartments and 2 rooms.

The holiday apartments are arranged as follows:
- 4 one-room apartments
- 6 twin-room apartments (2 bathrooms) with a shared kitchen.

All the apartments and rooms have plenty of room for additional sleeping space.

The common rooms have been stylishly decorated with art. Mario is an art lover and artist friends of his use the villa as a gallery. If you're looking for a quiet evening, you could do a lot worse than to relax in these rooms or on the picturesque terrace. There's plenty of information available here about the region and also video films (some in English). One of the common rooms has a video recorder, DVD player, satellite TV and large screen available for guests to use.

You can sense that someone has had a real eye for detail in the entire complex. From the stone floors to the painted glass doors to the arched cellar that has been restored, everything is well kept and has been well thought out. Indeed, some of the villa's energy needs are provided for by its own solar-cell system.
Bearing in mind the quality accommodation offered by this stylish villa and the excellent food made from ingredients from quality-controlled organic farming, the prices are truly fantastic.
